Network Print Distribution for Unisys 2200 and ClearPath IX Mainframes.

Spin-X/LPR-LPD provides an industry standard mechanism for Unisys® 2200 and ClearPath IX applications to access network based printers. Spin-X/LPR-LPD allows other network-attached systems that support the LPR/LPD (RFC 1179) protocol to access printers connected to the Unisys 2200 or ClearPath IX. From the network side, the Unisys 2200 or ClearPath IX appears as a Unix box with applications and attached printers. From the Unisys 2200 and ClearPath IX side, applications simply continue to use the standard @SYM command to submit their reports for printing. Spin-X/LPR-LPD handles the data conversion, formatting, and interface protocol.

Formatting, Conversion and Print Streams

With Spin-X/LPR-LPD, standard Unisys SDF formatted print files can be automatically converted into PostScript®, HP/PCL®, ANSI, ASCII or any number of other industry standard formatted print streams. These print streams can then be delivered to network attached printers or printers attached to other hosts supporting LPR/LPD. Among hosts currently supporting LPD/LPD: Sun Microsystems' SunOS, IBM's AIX, DEC's Unix, Hewlett Packard's Unix, IBM's AS/400, IBM's MVS. Many printers also have native support for LPR/LPD such as the Xerox® DocuPrint® series of printers. In addition, network server attached printers, such as Novell® or Microsoft® network attached printers can also be accessed from the Unisys 2200 or ClearPath IX using Spin-X/LPR-LPD.

Eliminate PC Gateways

Best of all, this can be accomplished without requiring any specialized hardware attached to the Unisys 2200 or ClearPath IX, the network, or any server. No dedicated "gateway" server hardware is required. Spin-X/LPR-LPD uses the standard Unisys TSAM communications system interface to seamlessly integrate into the Unisys 2200 communications environment. This software based solution eliminates the expense and inherent risk involved in using PC based hardware technology as a gateway to mission critical printing.

Network Attached Printers

If your Unisys mainframe is currently using Xerox or other channel attached printers, only applications running on the mainframe, or on other mainframes attached via a channel transfer switch can access these printers. By upgrading to a network attached printer, such as the Xerox DocuPrint, the same level of service, duty-cycle and functionality provided by your current printer is retained, with the advantage of broad based access by all other systems and applications running over your network.

New Product Compatibility

Spin-X/LPR-LPD™ is fully compatible with Spin-/Vista™, the Microsoft® Windows® desktop report viewer. Spin-X/Vista™ allows any report generated on any system that supports LPR/LPD to be delivered directly to the user's desktop.
